Has anyone used GPS collars on goats?

I mean for fencing, not tracking. We have a couple collars for our dogs, and they work flawlessly. I'm wondering if anyone has experience training goats to them.

The cheapo units we have just detect a circular perimeter from wherever you set the center point. You then set the radius of the circle, and you're done. When the collar gets too close to the perimeter it beeps and vibrates. Our dogs don't even go close enough to get beeped at. If, after a certain number of cycles of beeping and buzzing, the collar isn't moved away from the perimeter then it shocks. It only shocks a few times and then it just turns off, so you don't keep shocking a panicking dog that can't get back inside the perimeter or something. You can set beep volume and vibration and shock intensity.

So? Has anyone used something like this? Any thought?

I've never raised goats myself, but it sounds plausible.

It sounds like it's done a certain amount with larger herds in areas where fencing isn't practical. I can't tell from what I've read if they do anything to train the goats beforehand or just let them figure it out on their own. I'm guessing they just figure it out.

If I were to do it, I'd only have a couple goats and I'd want to move them around. I think it would be less confusing for them to have a few areas all a little ways from each other, rather than setting up a new zone right next to the old one. That way it would be more like, "okay, are we going to the hazelnut field or the birch copse today?" rather than "oh, no, you're not tricking me. I know that area's just past my boundary!"

I'd train them to the collars the same way I trained my dogs. I'd just bring them up to the point the collars start making noise, then run them back towards the centre of the circle and praise them. Do this a few times on leash, then off, then leave them to it and watch to make sure they got it.

Look! I laid an egg! Why does it smell like that? Tiny ad, does this smell weird to you?
