I had to furnish a chicken run as free-ranging became impossible because of the losses.

I took four pieces of plank.
Screwed them together.
Put the square into the chicken run
Filled it with peaty, sawdusty soil
Added lots of ash
Stood back and wondered what is it that I happened to get right??? The place is PACKED

That is great.
Where did the ash idea come from?

I've seen dust bath "recipes" in books in the past and ash is one thing on the list to help discourage mites/lice. Sharp sand and diatomaceous earth are also recommended if available, but ash is pretty common if you burn wood for any reason.

I suppose it is the pH. Ash has a very high pH so it disinfects.
I would not go into recipes. I just threw in a bucketful of ash and mixed it up.
It rained today, and I am wondering how to cover the sandbox. I have a decent pile of "stuff for undefined future use" and I am hoping I could find the materials there 😄

That's great. I think I will make one too.  I have an old bathtub in my chicken yead. I saw chickens get in it all the time, so I put some sand and diatomaceous earth in it thinking it makes a great dust bath.  The chickens did not agree. They never use it. I haven't seen them in the bath since.
You could put a board, or branch in each corner and give it a little slanted roof.  It would keep most of the rain out, and provide shade.
Thanks
