I'm located in Colorado Springs and I have 40 acres of land where I'm starting a walipini. I need assistance with designing the roof slope and wall depth for year-round growing. Can anyone help me determine the angles and the necessary depth for digging to maximize light during the equinox and solstice? I'm new here and really hope someone familiar with Colorado can provide guidance.
Colorado springs CO is @ 39° north. The walapini design is for an equilateral location about 18° south originally. It is a poor match for your location.
The south wall needs to be much lower to allow direct sun on the south bed in winter.
A very similar and proven Northern design is Mike Oehler's underground greenhouse.

I'm @ 43° North and planning on building something like this next summer. Without glassing in the roof it will not have full sun in summer, but I'm gardening outside then.

This a a video of a guy growing oranges in Nebraska so it should work in your location.
It isn't a true walapini but it is a similar idea. He sells kits and plans but he also gives away enough information in his videos that you could probably figure it out on your own.
It wasn't my idea to go to some crazy nightclub in the middle of nowhere. I just wanted to stay home and cuddle with this tiny ad:
