Summary

Meyer Hatchery was founded by Karen Meyer in 1985. Karen was a young mother, raising her family alongside her husband on their dairy farm in Polk, Ohio and her small flock of chickens was her hobby. As the hobby flock grew into a small business, family support and hard work put the business on the path to success. Over 35 years later, the Meyer Family are still proud owners of the industry-leading hatchery that offers over 160 breeds of poultry including chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, guineas, and game birds, plus a full line of feed and supplies.

I give this hatchery 8 out of 10 acorns.

My first EVER set of chicks came from Meyer Hatchery out of Ohio. The website is easy to navigate, I could make quick sense of their breed hatching dates and pick an assortment that are all to hatch at the same time. There are sections for specialty group of breeds such as Funky or specific egg color types as well as their Meyer exclusives. I ended up getting a bunch of common types on the heavy section as well as a handful of specialty birds. The birds shipped with an electrolyte packet to get them to recover from their journey as well as having heat packs.

All the chicks arrived alive and healthy, some issues with the post office but who doesn't have them these days? The way they were packaged was impressive. Unfortunately one of the chicks, a specialty one, ended up having crossbeak and failed to thrive. I informed the hatchery and they promptly refunded my money for that chick. I appreciate the sentiment and the ease of getting customer service to respond.

I would use this hatchery again.

Quite right. Mayer has individual chicks costing up to $48 each. ~Thanks to the current economy, prices of everything are going up.

But you see, you really need to spend some time on their website. There are also chicks for $1.55. And any of the chick's prices go down as you increase the quantity of chicks purchased. And even better, if you can visit the store, they always have a large "box" of mixed birds for really cheap. Those chickens are what are left over each week when all the orders go out. You can pick and choose which you want. We always get the multi-colored egg layers, which sometimes even include more "exotic" birds.

We love going to Meyers. We've been going there for years. You can get everything you could want or imagine for raising chickens. Of the many hundreds, probably thousands, of chickens and ducks we have gotten there, very few have had a problem. And any that do, Meyers is happy to refund.

I have been farming for a long time. I have ordered day old chicks from many places across the US (including occasional mail orders from Meyers). And I have found that Meyers is the best place for my needs. I highly recommend them. Most especially if you can go yourself, -and get that really good deal on mixed birds. (We have no affiliation or friendship with anyone at Meyers. It's just a darn good company with a superior "product.)

10 out of 10.
