I suppose that there are some people that want to eat permaculture food, but have zero interest in cooking or horticulture or animal husbandry. They like to be exposed to these things, but they cannot shoulder any commitment. At the same time, they might be able to work from home, or maybe they have investments or ... whatever. Perhaps folks like this are open to the idea of simply being a renter. the funds collected help to cover all of the other expenses.

Somebody has to pay for taxes and stuff. If it isn't them, it's YOU!

I like the idea of renting. I will be doing the same thing on a newly started permie property in Washington state. I am happy to rent and pay all my expenses for a year or so because:
1. I cannot volunteer much right now, because I am writing a book
2. I have a 'frozen shoulder' which needs time to heal
3. My rent money goes to creating the vision, which makes me very very happy
4. I can be part of the creation of the vision and still have my time for my book
5. When the book is done, and I can spend much more of my time creating the vision, we will work out another arrangement, based on what the group wants/needs and what brings me joy to contribute.
