Hello dear walnut tree lovers,

I'm an artist interested in plants and ecology and often include sprouts and living plants within my artworks. I'm making an installation that includes sprouting walnuts and potatoes for a large scale museum in Buffalo NY but sadly my walnut sprouting harvest failed this time. Last year I got a beautiful bunch of nuts but this year something went wrong..

I've often looked at this forum for advice and inspiration but never signed up until now and wanted to ask if anybody has 1-3 spare walnut sprouts that they would be willing to donate to the project?

Don't hesitate to contact me - I can give a lot more context about the project.
Warmly,
Birna

Welcome to Permies!

I'm east of you towards Saratoga Springs. I do not have any walnuts that I am sprouting this year but I'll keep my eyes open.

I'd love to hear more about your art and what you are doing. The picture has made me curious.

I picked up a whole lot of walnuts in the fall and they are sitting in buckets in the barn, do you want some? If it stops raining here, I can also check in the yard for some sprouted nuts.

Hi both,

That would be amazing - thank you so much, Susan! If you find some sprouted ones that would be ideal but I wouldn't say no to a few unsprouted either )

And thanks for your message Timothy, this particular installation is a photosynthetic installation where all the works are affected by day- and sunlight. There are the sprouts that root and grow in their plastic containers over the period of the exhibition but there's also a digital layer to the installation where solar panels are installed to power digital sprouts that grow according to the amount of daylight/energy available at any given time.

I'll attach some photos to show you!

If you haven't been able to get any, try reaching out to Sean at Edible Acres (https://www.edibleacres.org/).  I don't recall whether he grows walnuts, but he grows many trees from seed and is located in the Finger Lakes area.  Good luck.

Thank you so much Derek, I will definitely reach out to them!

And dear Susan - you haven't come across some lucky walnut sprouts in your garden since last week, have you? (I sent you a purple message, not sure if you've seen it yet)
