Hi Erica,
Where are you?  Then people who raise chicken in your neighborhood can react.
You can also add your location to your profile description.

What breed are your heritage chickens?

I asked Google who told me breeds that were from parents/grandparent and recognized by the the American Poultry Assoc.

The list of breeds was long ...

I have property in south east Missouri, Shannon county.  Was wondering if anyone on the area was working with any heritage chicken breeds (listed on the livestock conservancy site).  Even if we werent working with the same breeds maybe we could still collaborate.  I don't have a flock yet, still deciding.  Just trying to source local:)  I'm interested in the old standards: new hamshires, rhode islands, barred rocks australorps  etc.....basically good dual purpose breeds

I'm no chicken breeder, but I have a friend who is breeding a dual-purpose chicken by crossing Rhode Island Reds with Bresse (a great meat breed from France). So far they seem to be nice meaty birds that still lay well. The idea being that one gets a good carcass from them after they stop laying eggs so much, plus from the roosters.

And yes Rhode Island Reds were originally described as dual-purpose, but the modern lines have largely been bred for egg-laying. Perhaps there are still more traditional ilnes out there.

Hi Nate,  Interesting project of your friend: the rir x breese.  Should be a great combo!  Just another reason to keep heritage flocks around.....so we can make wonderful F1 hybrids.  This cross also makes me think of the developement of the Lamona breed.

There is a closed flock of Australorps in West Plains, MO downsizing. Chicks available at end of March too. Advertised on Craigslist.
Seems like there is a farm in Thayer that has a number of heritage...
