(earthfolks united to save the planet, aka "Planet Earth Recovery Mission Itinerant Environmental Stewards!!!")
WHO AM I?
My adopted name for more than 30 years has been Sky Amor De Cosmos. This name expresses my love for life and the astonishing universe we all have been born into and are part of! I am a long time international activist who has worked most of her life in the peace, social justice and environmental protection movements to try to alleviate suffering in this world and to enable the possibility of a sustainable future.
FROM ACTIVIST TO CATALYST??
I have for the past few years been preoccupied with the question of how to help people (and myself) to form functional intentional agrarian communities.......ie., how to take the words of Crosby, Stills and Nash and Joni Mitchell: "we've got to get back to the garden", and put them into practice, albeit belatedly!
HOW DID I GET CONNECTED?
My recent wanderings have led me to PERMACULTURE EVENTS at Sahale GOODENOUGH community in Western Washington.
This has led to an increasing interest on my part in putting permaculture principles and lore into practice.
COMING DOWN TO EARTH! Where are the keys to the puzzle?
I have come to believe that this practice of permaculture principles and lore is a key that will help to unlock the VERY PERSISTENT PUZZLES of how we can get along with each other well enough to really call ourselves communities, how we can really find true health and happiness, and how we can steward the earth and teach our fellow humans by example well enough to build a sustainable future.
When several new permaculture practicing friends alerted me to the existence of this PERMIES site, I realized that I had to get involved.
HOW TO GET OVER THE FEAR OF REACHING OUT AND FAILING??
JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES & JUMP??
Well, with eyes wide, I have just managed to take the leap and have registered on this already widely known permies website as a participant!
Meanwhile, I've been scratching in the dirt, planting lots of tomatoes and other veggies, and trying to prepare myself for an agrarian lifestyle.
Therefore it will not be a surprize to you that my first EARTH-SHAKING communication is to let you know that a small group of people in British Columbia including myself have started an exceedingly unique intentional agrarian community on the SUNSHINE COAST, about two and a half hours north of Vancouver. AND:
WE ARE NOW CALLING FOR PARTICIPANTS IN OUR PROJECT:
OUR PROJECT is called "GREEN WORLD" A clever acronym for:
GREAT REVOLUTIONS in ECOTOPOEIAN EXCELLENCE in the NORTHWEST! and:
WITNESSES OF RESURGENT LIFE DIRECTIONS!
HERE'S HOPING that somehow connecting with our new community will be for some of you and us as well, the penultimate PACIFIC NORTHWEST ECOTOPOEIA EXPERIENCE!
WHY ECOTOPOEIA and not ECOTOPIA??
Because POEIA means MAKING or CREATING!!! (Making Ecotopia)
Can ECOTOPOEIA be a HOME for US???
We are vitally involved in seeking to create an appropriate home for ourselves, where ourselves means people of the earth (and other animals) dedicated to, and compatible with, making the world a better place.
HOW CAN ECOTOPOEIA ACTUALLY COME TO BE??
We believe that ECOTOPOEIA is not an end point. It is not a static condition, but rather a process of becoming, through listening to others and learning, by gently teaching, by engaging in continuous careful consideration, discourse, judgement and tempered efforts to acheive collective understanding and balance.
We think that permaculture principles and lore are some of the keys for helping to restore and enhance balance and harmony in nature, and by studying these natural examples, that we can gradually develop ourselves into a continuously evolving, adaptive agrarian community that reflects the perfection of the natural world.
Through the mutual interaction of our human community with all the elements of our natural setting on the sunshine coast, and with the help of the larger permaculture community, we will seek to become as completely integrated with nature as is humanly possible. In this case, the nature that is referred to will have been significantly altered by us, so as to comprise an exemplary, innovative, and ever-renewing permaculture project, comprising 5 acres of forest gardens, especially EDIBLE (food yielding) ones!
Put in simple terms, we will be one with the nature that wer have nurtured, just as nature nurtures us. A symbiotic interactive and interdependent relationship sustains both.
This community will also be "networked" (That is, connected) using state of the art appropriate communications technology with as many other like-minded communities around the world as possible.
It will also include a WORLD PERMACULTURE CENTRE that will stand as an example to other people in other places around the world that they may emulate, complement, and collaborate with.
WHERE IS THE SUNSHINE COAST??
For those of you who are not familiar with B.C., the Sunshine Coast is just north of Vancouver, on the Sechelt Peninsula, a quick 40 minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay, which is in turn about a 30 minute drive from Vancouver City Hall.
SECHELT & SARGENT'S BAY PARK
Our property is not far from the small town of Sechelt, in a rural residential area that is very secluded, and immediately beside a large provincial park that includes a wide curved public beach with rocky and sandy portions bordering on Sargent's Bay, a waterfront wildlife habitat conservation project with a large duck-pond, and a very large forested area filled with hiking trails, wildlife, streams, small lakes and abundant other natural wonders.
The provincial park extends all the way from the ocean front to the highway, and the property is about halfway between. From the highway to the beach is about a twenty minute walk, on a hiking trail through the park. From the property to the waterfront takes about 10 minutes, mostly on an untravelled country road.
WHAT IS "GREEN WORLD" LIKE SO FAR?
The BIG LOG HOUSE:
The main dwelling and meeting area on the land is a beautiful, custom-made log home with 2 and a half storeys. It is perched on a rocky ridge called Rocky Ridge!!!
The road is also called Rocky Ridge Road. The big house has a deck that wraps 3/4 of the way around it and it boasts an incredible panoramic view of the park, the Bay below, the ocean that stretches out of sight in both directions, and Vancouver Island, including Nanaimo, the Gulf Islands, and the Olympic Peninsula!
There are two additional buildings, a detached cabin/studio and a second cabin yet to be finished.
HOW ABOUT THE LAND?
Surrounding the house, we have five acres of forested land (not first growth) that has huge potential for edible gardening and permaculture design. There are beautiful rock bluffs covered with soft green moss, and a multitude of different kinds of trees, including many red-barked arbutus trees wherever the sun shines. There are also some relatively flat areas that could be partially cleared of brush to enable vegetation requiring more direct sunlight. There is also a stream running through the property that swells to a significant size in rainy seasons.
We have already started to create a sustainable agriculture project based on the growing lore that we are acquiring through our shared experience and learning from others.
Ultimately we envision a world-wide permaculture centre, a retreat centre and healing centre, and a school of sustainable agriculture, earth stewardship, appropriate science, technology and the arts.
ARE THERE ANY PRE-REQUISITES FOR JOINING US???
We invite responsible, thoughtful, compassionate and hard-working people to join us in this amazing adventure. Our shared home already serves as a self-healing retreat, a gathering place, a workspace, and a cozy dwelling. We have enough room for numerous temporary guests, as well as those who choose to stay for the long term. We welcome each person or group as unique, and make different kinds of arrangements for accommodation of many different kinds of individuals.
Not everyone can meet the requirements that I have mentioned here for positive human qualities. Our philosophy is to try and be as open as possible to newcomers. It is of course not possible to 'never exclude anyone'. If a person comes to stay with us and does not 'fit' in terms of being able to get along with others, they will be given polite notice to leave within a reasonable time, usually at least a month, unless they are compromising the rights to a peaceful safe environment of others, in which case they will be obliged to leave immediately.
So, if you are interested in joining us, even for a very short time, do not hesitate to let us know. First we can talk on the phone and find out what our respective interests and concerns are, in order to determine what kind of mutual arrangement is appropriate.
LOOKING FORWARD TO TALKING TO YOU AND MEETING YOU!!!
Thanks for your e-mail. There is much to tell, so why don't we try also to get in touch with each other by phone.
I will send you a private message with my landline number. (If anyone else wishing to talk to me in person is reading this post, just e-mail me and tell me what you are interested in and I'll send my phone number to you.)
Our community is very open and also open ended, since we are just starting out. There is plenty of room to put in your two cents worth, and this forum is a good place to start.
As for you, David, you are welcome to come here, and I hope you do, but first we need to have more conversation on this site, or private email conversation about what you would like to do there, and then we need to talk on the phone to work out the details. This doesn't have to take a long time. If you're rarin' to go, more power to you!!
Please tell me what kind of dreams you want to fulfill?
Keep the private parts to youself if you like, or use personal email for those, and tell the world the rest in this permaculture forum and subtopics.
That also goes for you others who have just started to follow this THREAD....
