I was raised by hippies. Most people think I'm a hippies even though I'm totally not. What's wrong with hippie? Hippies can be permies too. I think what frustrates people* (and what many people will assign the hippie label) Is always talking about getting together and singing songs to save the world - with out ever just going and and singing the songs (and do the deeds) necessary - Or something like that... I'd bet a good deal of the leadership around here (there's leadership around here?) has been labeled as hippie-ish. Some may even self identify as such.

Stop! Don't Shoot!

Edit:

*I of course cannot speak for Jack - but I did listen in on his podcast.

I think that for some reason (insecurity maybe?) some folks need a group to put down in order to define their position. The whole 'crazy hippie' thing has really bothered me in the past...now I just take it that we had that large of an impact to become a catch phrase If we like a 'group' we tend to identify them by their best qualities...if we don't like them we focus on the worst...I am proud to be a 'crazy hippie'...if I wanted a label, those are the folks I share the most ideals with.
Look at it as a test of tolerance and send jack some positive energy.

It's all just blatant stereotyping that has no historical perspective . When we allow ourselves to be labelled as outdated adherents to a passe movement then we discount the valid efforts and achievements of some very valid people . We also allow ourselves to be manipulated by people who have political agendas and advertizing schemes . Did you know that the flower child image in the sixties was initially created by a company that sold blue jeans ? Don't be a dupe . Think for yourself ! Question Authority ! Visual World Peace ! This guy at work the other day yelled out at me " How's it going , you old hippy " . Some young people sang out " He's an old hippy and he don't know what to do " . I yelled back "Old hippies know exactly what to do , no one else wants do do it anymore" . I thought silently to myself "Bunch of Walmart Roll Back Consumers of Corporate Pablum. Don't eat the Naked Lunch ! Get naked on your lunch break !" Fly your freak flag Sam .

Addendum : Heres a link to an older thread called "Die Hippy Die " . We had alot of fun on this one :

Um Sam - there is a potential flaw to your trigger-pulling plan. I doubt, as a self-identified hippy, you own a gun... Just sayin'!

Like others have said here, there is a broad spectrum represented - you're fine the way you are.

There's hippies and there's hippies, Sam

Whether or not you talk to the spirits of the plants you grow does not matter nearly so much as the fact you're growing plants.

If you're sitting around talking to the spirits of plants you only dream of growing and have never actually planted anything, well, that might be another story.

We all fall somewhere on a spectrum, and very, very few of us have either zero hippy or zero establishment.

Permaculture is revolutionary - hippies identify pretty well with that - and so do some pretty radically different demographics. All good, as long as the ideas are growing and getting acted upon.
