Was reading the thread on spring garlic and decided to throw this into the mix. I order onion plants this time of year and plant by march 15. 36 degrees latitude [Kansas/ Oklahoma border] is the dividing line between long-day and short-day varieties. Day neutral varieties anywhere.
I never had luck growing onions from seed or sets and had gopher and rain damage from fall plantings, so this is a solution that works for me.
I still have about 4 dozen onions left from harvest last august and we cook with onions almost every day.
