When planting shallots is bigger better? Should I cook with the small ones and plant out the best looking? Cooking now - quick answers very much appreciated

Have you noticed any difference in yields = bulb size in/ bulb size out?

The smaller ones just need more time to grow. Most people want them a little bigger than a quarter.

Further question on shallots. If I plant out full grown shallot bulbs will they be going into their second season w/flowering the first year? Will I be able to collect my seed and eat 'um too? No huge rush.

Some shallots dont seed they just devide into more shallots . It depends on the type

Are these grocery store shallots? I've never planted them before...but I bought a pound from the grocery store this winter that look really nice. They are the size of an elongated walnut maybe. Do you think they will multiply the first year? I've been waiting until it warms up a bit because I wasn't sure they would take a freeze.

If I want to harvest red shallots, I would plant red ones.
If I want to harvest big shallots, I would plant big ones.

Short answer plant the big ones. then you are a bit more assured of propagating the desired genetics.

Iterations are fine, we don't have to be perfect

Yeah - I've heard "plant the bigger ones" too. I tried planting small ones from the Vietnamese grocery but they didn't produce well. Which is more about my climate and skill than about the shallots.

I agree with Matu - the little ones are a PAIN to peel.
