So trying to figure out how much space I need to have the ground be eaten to 30%.
So how much square feet approximately do you think I would need so 4 chickens would eat the vegetation down to about 30% in a week?
My chickens are chicks still and would like to plan. I guess I will eventually figure this out but my goal would be to design a run that is big enough for this to happen.
Location: west marin, bay area california. sandy loam, well drained, acidic soil and lots of shade

this is a question that ends up being more complicated than it sounds because it depends on things like time of year and what is growing and probably also types and sizes of chickens. I think this is one of the reasons why so many people like to use portable fencing. I don't have any chickens yet, I hope to get some ducks this summer and might try a paddock system with them. I don't know any real numbers for how large to make the paddocks but I think larger will probably always be better. you can let the chickens stay in a paddock longer or they can have more selection of their food.
