Massive hugel project being implemented on 34 acre Community Land Trust in Northern California
posted 2 years ago
We are a non-profit permaculture education and demonstration site establishing itself (we have 501c3 status). We are currently implementing hugelkultur on a grand scale. The site is located in a small, quirky northern California town nestled between Mt Shasta and Mt Lassen, surrounded by the Shasta-Trinity national forest. Attractions in the area include other permaculture projects, abundant water sources, Mediterranean climate, renowned trout fishing, a lively community of musicians, vast wilderness, diverse wildlife, and wonderful natural hot springs about three miles from the site.
We are seeking volunteers and are excited to have folks dig in with us and experiment with the hugelkultur technique and paddock shift system. We'd love help creating our "Wilderness Garden Maze." We are open to shorter visits and longer term stays.
We currently have 11 chickens, with plans of expanding heartily. We have a pond and plan to incorporate ancona ducks into an aquaculture system. There is a lot of potential here! Please visit our website for more information on this amazing project. http://bigbendclt.org/updates/
Those with skills and experience operating machinery are especially appreciated during our construction phase, as we've been utilizing an excavator and dump truck. Traditional woodworking is also a focus and we are currently constructing a farm stand from hand hewn timbers. There is a lot of hickory on the property along with a couple unkempt orchards in need of restoration. Coppice and food forest demonstration are in the vision.
We welcome help creating this incredible space which will become open to the public to harvest food and connect with nature. Current accommodations, depending on availability, may include a room in the existing shared house, a small cabin, or tent space. If interested please contact me at melissa at bigbendclt.org Thanks!
