I am interested in a beef breed. We have dabbled with mutts on craigslist for a while now. We just sold a jersey/angus cow. She produced way more milk than we wanted to deal with. Pineywoods looks like a real survivor breed that needs very little. My main concern is that all the herds that I have found our down south. How would a breed like this do in the snow?
I live in South central Mississippi and we used to have four steers of the Piney Woods breed that we used as oxen to log wind damaged timber.
While we rarely get really cold weather, we do occasionally get weather in the single digits. The record for our part of the world during my lifetime was 5 degrees F. My daddy's oxen lived through that with no problem.

There is an intentional community in southwest Georgia called Koinonia (see koinoniapartners.org) that is converting a fairly large landholding-several hundred acres-toward permaculture and holistic management, and is building up a herd of these cattle as part of that effort.....
