I've got some butterfly weed growing in the pasture out in front of the hives. I did not plant it there, but we transplanted some to the front of our southfacing house and the bees swarm it! On a patch that's roughly 5 foot square, at any point of a warm day they'll be perhaps 200 bees on it all day long.

My main question is this - does this provide good nectar for them (not seen ANY with pollen on their legs from it), in other words, does it produce good honey? Would I be doing myself favors by promoting its growth (bushhogging AROUND it, spreading its seed, etc), or finding another flowering thing for them?

When we first noticed it 3 years or so ago, there were only a few, now there's probably 50 plants out there. The clumps of them are about 200 feet from my hives!

Thoughts?

Thanks!

According to wikipedia, Asclepias tuberosa

It is commonly known as Butterfly Weed because of the butterflies that are attracted to the plant by its color and its copious production of nectar.

I'd say if the bees are all over it, leave some for them. It could have nectar without pollen, I think.
