Hi - long time lurker here. My husband’s chemotherapy was awfully hard on his cognition so we tried lion’s mane tincture twice a day during treatment and continued for a couple of months afterward. Short term results were quite remarkable- if he missed a dose or two it was fairly obvious. Long term, he’s pretty much himself again, 6 months out. He still can’t remember passwords but he can do the New York Times crossword - go figure!

I grow lions mane for my own consumption.
Using mushroom grow bags, I put in one pound of hardwood sawdust, one pound of ground soy hulls, and three pounds of water. I fold the bag shut, put rubber bands around it, and cook it in the pressure cooker for 2 hours at 15 psi.  After it cools, I open the bag and pour in some lions mane spawn (I get mine from NorthSpore.com).

I seal the bag and wait, usually for about three weeks, until it fruits.  Then I slice the bag on all sides and put it in a shotgun fruiting chamber, as you shouldn’t spray lions mane directly.

Note:if you don’t provide enough fresh air, it doesn’t form the teeth, as you can see in the picture

I can add that the Japanese govt has spent quite a lot of time and money studying the Lion's Mane Mushroom and its affect on cognitive function. They have published papers on the studies

here is a link to an abstract from one of the double blind studies

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18844328/

It works

oh and Kevin, that mushroom photo looks absolutely delicious !

Thank you all for reviving this topic. I have been enjoying wild Lion's Mane mushrooms (and their relatives) for many years. A few years ago a snowstorm left us with a LOT of downed trees. I ordered a bunch of spawn kits from Field & Forest and grew Lion's Mane on California Black Oak logs. This combination has done fairly well. The logs fruit in the spring and fall. The cultivated Lion's Mane mushrooms are even more delicious than the wild ones. I only wish the mushrooms were larger!

I made a tincture from Lion's Mane- just fresh fruiting bodies in vodka. The results were  delicious and I have already given a bunch of the tincture away. I plan to grow more and make more tincture in the coming year. The latest research looks very promising.

Hi - I've just started Lion's Mane for Senior ADHD.  It's fine, though by end of the day makes me very sad for some reason. Should I keep taking it?  I'm in to Day 4.  Thank you!

I have used lion main to good result to help my memory.

I have found buying it in bulk at a pound at a time is the way to go for me.

I have also bought a product called "brain pep"  off amazon.       This, combined with exercise and eating better has helped my health considerably.

You can grow lions main from a kit or buy the extract as well. Keep in mind there are two type of extractions through hot water and ethanol which provide more punch. I get mine at https://shroomshackorganics.com/

I described above how I was growing lions mane.  I’ve been experimenting, and Field and Forest videos introduced me to an easier method.

Take a mushroom grow bag, add to it 5 cups of hardwood pellets, a half cup of soy hull, and 5 cups of boiling water.  Shake and fold the bag top shut and turn upside down so no air enters it. Let cool for several hours or overnight.  Add 1.5 cups of lions mane grain spawn.

I buy spawn from NorthSpore and a bag will make 13 grow bags.

Here is a link to that Field & Forest video showing how to make your own lion's mane  sawdust blocks using millet grain spawn, hardwood pellets and wheat bran:

I have not tried this method yet, because I have a new supply of fresh oak logs to grow lion's mane on. But it looks like this simple method would work well for folks that don't have pressure cookers. Anyone else out there growing lion's mane?

Here's a quick and simple video from Tony at Freshcap Mushrooms on how to make your own lion's mane tincture:

I think that making and using your own tincture using alcohol and hot water extraction from fresh organic (or wild) lion's mane is probably the best way to get the full medicinal benefit from this species. But I like eating it, too!

Be reasonable. You can't destroy everything. Where would you sit? How would you read a tiny ad?
