Looks like it was bred for lard, which can be a great cooking oil.They're available in the US in Michigan. Man those are weird-looking pigs.

Does anyone know if their "wool" is acutally useful either for fiber or increased cold resistance?

Want to be careful about them in Michigan though. As I understand it, manual it's were the breed the DNR declared to be an invasive species and started shutting down the Baker (right name? Anyone with better recall want to help me out here? ) farm.

Again, as I understand, the Baker's strain of Mangalitsa had something else in there a few generations back and that was the proffered explanation for declaring their pigs both invasive and feral.

Crazy stuff that makes no sense to me. And yeah, they are a very different looking pig. I wonder if they handle sun better than more conventional coated pigs.

Maybe it's because they're a cross between Serbian pig breeds and European wild boar...wild boar sounds pretty wild to me. Maybe that's the issue. There are actually some people who raise Shiitakes and wild boar (for meat) here in Quebec. I'm assuming you can't raise wild boar everywhere if they're shutting people down in MI.

I'm a little hazy on it, but I think any heritage pig was suspect! That is to say any pig not a "normal" factory farm type of pig. Anyone know what happened with that issue?
