Welcome Jan Dohnre
I'm looking forward to reading all of the post this week and all of the linkage
Have been interested in LGDs a long time ,so much to learn.
I need one just to keep all the neighbors dogs away and they have many of mutts.
I have a 5 acre farm and surrounded by lavish homes of city folk that all think they need 5dogs a peace and keeps there acres looking like a golf course.
so I guess my question is would a LGD help me any and what breed.
I keep around 40 chickens and cattle but would like goats and sheep also.
Thanks

Hi Jimmy

Since you are surrounded by housing I would stick with the breeds from Western Europe rather than Easter Europe and Central Asia. In general, the LGD breeds become more reactive - which means they respond quicker and harder to perceived threats - as you move from west to east. Western breeds are dogs like the Great Pyrenees and the Italian Maremma and others. They will do a great job with warning off strange dogs and guarding your critters, without the increased liability of a more aggressive dog. I will say, all LGDs are big barkers, especially at night, which can be a problem with neighbors.

Great Pyrenees is the breed I had in mind
large and beautiful big barkers won't be a problem.
we have that all night any way.
Thanks again
