I was going to run 3 hens in a chicken tractor on my backyard but I just realized there's plastic mesh in the sod and I'm worried about the girls getting caught in it.
Anyone have thoughts about this? I'm going to hold off running them till I find out it's safe..

Plastic mesh? How did it get there? Is it something to keep the soil in place until the grass grows up? How big are the holes if you are worried about your chickens' feet getting caught in it?

Since I've seen chickens held in rabbit wire cages, chicken wire cages and various types of welded wire - without them getting their feet caught in it - I would put them out on it. You might also want to think about pulling it out of the sod, if at all possible, just my two cents here.

I have found that someone installed that plastic mesh under Bermuda grass In my back yard. during digging a swale I uncovered a lot and pulled out as much as I could. I have come home two times to find chicks stuck in the mesh that had come uncovered, all of them were OK since I found them in time and cut them loose. my adult hens have never gotten stuck in it or had any trouble. when I first discovered the mesh I was dumbfounded that someone would bury plastic under an entire backyard, still not sure why.
