I am 24 and have about $140k to buy a small piece of land, build a tiny house and build a small hydroponic facility. I want to "homestead" or have a small farm that can support myself initially. I would love to reside somewhere in Hawaii, preferably a rainforest region, or the very least to find land somewhat close to a beach.
I would love to start a co-op with web-based sales sending "exotic" produce to the other 49 states but right now I would just like to get planted in the beautiful state.
This is my goal and I have not started planning yet but I need to now, any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
My greatest concerns are finding inexpensive land that is not desert like and close to a hardware store/home depot/lowes and maybe close to a farming community area.
I also will need contracted help with the framing of my initial outbuilding which I am hoping I can organize without flying down a few times (thankfully I have some air miles saved just in case).
Thanks for any input, this move is going to be big for me!

Hi Jay,

I'm on the opposite side of the world from Hawaii, but Su Ba is a regular contributor here on permies who lives and homesteads there. Here is her profile, you can message her through there, if she doesn't find this thread first:

Big Island is about the only affordable one for your budget. However, not all land has soil on it, especially over in the Puna/ Pahoa district, so don't buy land sight unseen.

You're much more likely to be able to buy land in a rainforest than somewhat close to a beach. The side of the island with the soil doesn't have the big white sandy beaches, more of a rocky beach. The big white sandy beaches are in the resort area, don't have decent soil to grow anything and are priced way out of your budget range anyway.

North of Hilo if you can manage it has a lot less crime (mostly "just" theft, but a lot of theft in Puna/Pahoa) and there is deeper soil on the Hamakua coast.

Hawaii Island has loads of different micro-climates, depending on what crops you wanted to grow, you may prefer one elevation over another.

The University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (called CTAHR for short) has more information about growing things in Hawaii than you'll be able to dig through: http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/site/ Sending "exotic" stuff to the mainland or elsewhere involves red tape and shipping, there's farmer's markets here which would be an easier entry into sales than boxing and shipping.

Up around Mountainview to Volcano area might work if the Hamakua coast doesn't suit. But before buying land, have you visited the islands before?

Those cherries would go best on cherry cheesecake. Don't put those cherries on this tiny ad:
