Hi Emily,
I spoke with Valerie last year when I was working on my book and also asked the bees about her idea of playing healthy hive sounds inside hives that were struggling. Her hope was that it would jump start the slower hive and help them become stronger sooner.
The bees said that hive sounds are very specific to each hive. The colony's movements on the combs tell every bee all the activities going on in the hive at one time. The bees hear about everything going on around them and adjust their actions to fit in that sound embrace.
They said it wouldn't hurt to listen a little to another hive, like eavesdropping on good stuff that could be encouraging, but not to listen for long because the weaker hive would be hearing a conversation that is not happening in their home. It would be confusing.
It's such a good idea that I really wished it would work but after hearing them describe that situation, I don't think it's the perfect solution. It could, in certain situations, be useful but with restraint.
ps. I do dedicate some time to this discussion in my book. It was a question worthy of being asked and I enjoyed speaking with Valerie about it.
warmly,
Jacqueline
