This week Rose Seemann will be joining us to talk about all sorts of different ways to compost and recycle pet poo.

There are four copies of her book, The Pet Poo Pocket Guide up for grabs.

Rose will be stopping by on the forum over the next few days answering questions and joining in discussions.

From now through this Friday, any posts in this forum, ie the composting forum, could be selected to win.

To win, you must use a name that follows our naming policy and you must have your email set up in Paul's Daily-ish email.

The winner will be notified by email and must respond within 24 hours.

Posts in this thread won't count, but please feel free to say hi to Rose and make her feel welcome!

What is the "naming policy" you speak of? The link doesn't work for me and takes me to an error page. TIA for any info on this!

Thank you for addressing the pet poo question Rose! It has been something I have wondered about for a long time. My cats bury their treasures and I scoop them up everyday and collect them for the garbage. It always seems a waste to me as if they pooped outside they would be burying it into the top 6 inches of soil which is exactly where they should for maximum biodegrading. (Such smart hairy little people! ) They know something that most of humans don't I suspect! I am so happy that you are here!

Hi Anne, the link worked for me. From that page:

All permies.com users are asked to use a real sounding name as their display name.

There's more on the naming policy page about how to go about doing that and addressing concerns someone might have.

And, by the way, your name is just fine!

Thank you Jocelyn, I needed to update Java so Firefox would stop blocking it, then clear permies.com cookies and now it works and I can see that page. My name is my real name anyway.

I have been composting our humanure and pet waste for about two years. We used our compost this year. I corresponded with Joseph Jenkins before we started and inquired about composting cat poop because of all the misinformation I have heard. We have not test our compost yet, however our pile has reached nearly 140 degrees Fahrenheit and has held there for several weeks. I have no doubt this has cooked the crap out of our crap. That said I have one issue with composting cat waste -- the clay clumps and forms giant balls of clay, which are not very nice to work with. What I have been doing since is taking the cat litter and dumping it by a dead tree in the woods. I cover it with leaves and let it be. We have gone on poop patrol and placed our dog feces in and have had no issues. Could we? It is possible and would only be determined through a proper compost analysis.

Chris if you switch your cats to sawdust for kitty litter it will solve your composting problem and help your pocketbook. Plus the litter box is easier to clean.

Rose, I'm looking forward to your book! I had the privilege of meeting Malcolm Beck last year in San Antonio and we had the chance to discuss his collecting canine manures from a local dog kennel. Fascinating stuff as I'm sure yours will be as well. I wish you nothing but the best in all you do.

Welcome, Rose! This is a topic that I, too, have pondered for a long time, and have always been told NO on the cat poop composting. Interested to hear what other folks are doing (instead of throwing the kitty waste away)!

So I ran the winner picker app in the forum software and we have 2 winners.

Laurie Branson
and
Lazlo Rose

Congratulations Laurie and Lazlo!

I sent you an email to ask for the email address of the person that first referred you to Permies.com. That person (if qualified) will also get a copy of the book and a permies care package.

Hey cool! They got a blimp! But I have a tiny ad:
