Because that's what they find when they escape.

There no more mystery than that.

It is rather annoying though when you are first starting out and only have a handful of fruit and your chickens get to them first.

Absolutely. There is a lot to learn about the little buggers.

I made the comment because it has been suggested that they escape and eat your berries, or prize petunias, because they lack some particular nutrients in their “regular” feed.
I don’t believe they wander about, saying,”You know, we’re lacking certain nutrients in the feed around around here, so when I bust out, I’m heading straight for the strawberries….”
The reality is they grab what they find, first, be it berries or begonias.

The adage "What they don't eat, they'll s...poop on" definitely applies to chickens!
