Yesterday we went and picked up my new nurse cow. I've wanted this breed for ages and ages now but always had issues building up the money. With the loss of my Holstein in December it was kind of a "get a new nurse cow or you won't have a nurse cow". So I made it work! Honestly the hardest part was finding calves that weren't made of gold :

Behold, Acorn!

Acorn is a 3 year old F3 Fleckvieh who freshened with her second calf in January. She was AI'd March 1 so hopefully is already bred with another Fleck calf for me. At freshening she was at 28L and the lady figured she'd be around 36L a day by now - but I forgot to ask yesterday! Oops. We've got four calves for her that, while she isn't overly impressed with, has been allowing to nurse as long as she's in the head gate. Baby steps!

The only bad part is this puts me way over my acreage's capacity for animals when the grass starts coming in. I'm gonna have to find somewhere for last years calves or end up taking them to the auction. Foofoo.
