I have a 1 year old Great Pyrenees as myLGD for a flock of sheep. I got her when she was just 2 months old and she has pretty much lived with the ewes ever since. I've been flying by the seat of my pants getting my farm up and running, and it's taken until now to realize that I've never given her any shots or medications - which I know is normal to do with any dog you keep as a pet.
So I'm wondering, do I need to give my LGD any of these shots? Are they things I can just get at Tractor Supply and do myself? I checked the medication schedule they advertise at TSC, but it includes things starting at just a few weeks old. I'm assuming I don't need to do all of these things now that she's much older, but I don't know where to begin. Please help if you know what I should do.
Dean, I'm not familiar with the canine diseases common to your area, but I would suggest vaccinating her with a broad spectrum canine vaccine that includes distemper and parvovirus. At her age she would need two vaccinations 3 to 4 weeks apart, per the recommendation of that particukar vaccine manufacturer. She would then need a booster 12 months later. Then depending upon the prevalence of disease in your region, she would be revaccinated yearly or once every three years.
The other vaccine she definitely needs is rabies. In some states the rabies vaccine must be given by a veterinarian in order to be legally recognized. I don't know if your state allows the owner to give the vaccine. You can check at your farm supply store. They most likely know, because they would be selling the vaccine if an owner may use it. Plus your farm supply store probably carries the distemper-parvo combo vaccine.
As for medications, I would suspect that heartworm exists in your area.
It's never too late to start! I retired to homestead on the slopes of Mauna Loa, an active volcano. I relate snippets of my endeavor on my blog : www.kaufarmer.blogspot.com
