Plastic versus glass bottle for selling salad dressing in

In process of choosing bottle for my salad dressing and need some advise. Which is the pro and con for plastic or glass bottle? Thanks for any help.

Both have imbued energy,glass seems to leave no poison behind,where as plastic contains plasticizers that leach,and have known environmental concerns.

Something else to consider about glass, if you're keeping these at home. Many glass containers are reusable. My mother was really excited when she found out that there is standardized information available for canning in the microwave. Basically anything that very acidic or very high sugar (water bath canning options) can be sealed in the microwave.

She reuses commercial jelly jars successfully in this fashion to extend the life of bulk salsa batches. I'm not going to reproduce the depth of research mother does, but she says it's a very well accepted technique in Australia.

My purpose is to start selling my salad dressing at local farmers market and I will make the dressing from my restaurant. Wanted to use plastic bottle but don't know much details about sterilize it before bottle. I could only find out glass bottle sterilization online.

For selling at a farmers market, I'd go with the glass jars that look like mason jars.  I think your product will have more of a "Homemade" appeal to the public. [Even though its made at your restaurant] Since the public is starting to think that plastic is unsafe and switching to glass products is another reason.

Personally I do not ever buy anything in plastic.

You couldn't have posed this question at a better time.

We are in the midst of "Plastic Free July".

As a consumer - I am much more drawn to a product in glass than in plastic. I never reuse the glass bottles that my dressing comes in, but I do recycle them.

I do consulting for the for the restaurant/deli/food industry. How about putting it in a mason jar? Charge an extra dollar and have them return them to you to get their dollar back. You can re-sterilize the glass mason jars. Just new new bands and lids and market it that way. Or they can keep the mason jar and they have paid a dollar into your next purchase of jars. Pints would be perfect.

Holy Cow, dont get me started! OK, now I'm committed. First there's the wisdom of vinaigrette: The oil coats what the vinegar macerates. But the macerating will interact with the plastic and you are what you eat:-)

Another vote for glass, especially if you take empty and cleaned bottles back.
How would you seal the glass bottles? Cork? Plastic plug?

If you're stuck on plastic, make it yourself. I bet it's possible to make an all organic hemp plastic that has a non-everlasting durability and a planned biodegradability determined, maybe, by its density. But gosh, who can step up to that plate?   OgreNick

Glass yes, yes, yes. Please use some sort of mason jar if you can. I'd like to see some regulation come about that ALL product sold in glass jars fit standard mason jar lids. It is so annoying to me when I get a glass jar, empty it, wash it, then it doesn't fit a standard regular or wide mouth jar lid and ring. What a waste! Especially the ones that are made to look like (some even have Mason embossed into them) mason jars, then they don't fit the standard lids.

I gotta vote for glass in this scenario. Glass may be breakable, and a little heavier to carry, but it's better for our planet, and in my book that's the bottom line.
Saving our planet is about making choices that may be inconvenient, but that benefits everyone in the long run.
I'm no saint here, and I use plenty of plastic in my daily life, but if we can vote to make something better, than we should.
Go for the glass!

I also prefer glass bottles because they don't leach harmful chemicals.

I love the swing top beer bottles but for sterilizing and reusing, the mason jar, especially wide mouth, would probably be a better choice.

I do use the swing top beer bottles with a macramed holder/strap to protect it from mild jarring and carrying for water bottles.
 
And when my army is complete, I will rule the world! But, for now, I'm going to be happy with this tiny ad:
