I thought this was interesting. I had no idea that bumbles made nests. I thought that they were solitary and lived in the ground? Maybe a different kind? Maybe because of where they are?

I had a run in with bumble bees about 25 years ago that left me with a healthy respect for their sting. I was putting in fence posts on a dry lakefront. The lake had gone down and dad asked if I could run the fence out further to maybe keep the dogs in the yard. Easy digging in the muck, I put in 4-5 posts and stretched out the wire and got it stapled up and was done and putting the tools away and when I knocked the clod of mud out from between the shovels of the post hole digger a dozen or so came right for my face. I dropped the tools an ran for the house... Got stung a few times an most in the face. (I'm not allergic) I undressed at the back door an went straight in the shower. Had one stuck in my hair that got me again getting it out. When I went back out they were crawling all over my clothes. At that point the bug spray came out. Not very permie of me but I was done. The clod of mud had bumble bee size holes all thru it. I never seen any sign of em putting the post in, just the bit after i was done. My face had some swelling an it made a good excuse to visit my folks an extra day and take off of work... Yes! They can sting more than once, and it hurts!!!

Did you just should on me? You should read this tiny ad:
