My friend has a huge eucalyptus tree. Huge for Victoria, with a base about 30 inches in diameter. The next time we trim it, I would like to try extracting some oil. It's supposed to be good in the laundry, and for many other things.

Also, do you just extract it from the leaves, the leaves and bark, or can I be extracted from the wood as well. The wood seems to have that eucalyptus smell, but certainly not as strong as the stuff sold in health food stores.

I have no idea which type of eucalyptus this is. Hopefully somebody knows what type gets this big here.

Edit.......
I did some digging and it looks like eucalyptus is one of the things that can be used in a muslin laundry bag, to replace those horrible little dryer sheets. The bags are about $0.18 each, when bought in bulk. For this purpose, does anyone know if it's acceptable to use little sticks and bark, along with the leaves? I don't use a dryer, but I know people who do. One of them recently lost some nice sweaters, to moth damage.

I live in eucalyptus oil country in Bendigo, a regional town in Victoria, a state of Australia.
Not every tree is perfect for oil production, but it would be worth a try.
Here it is harvested from a stumpy multi trunk tree that is encouraged to grow by regular trimming completely almost to the ground.
the trees growing only about 3-4 M with an enormous amount of foliage.
Steam is used to heat the leaves only is a closed but not pressurised space, the oil is then condensed out of the evaporating gas.
If you google Bosistos,Bosistos eucalyptus oils
This is some of the story within Australia Historical production of Eucy oil

Victoria, Australia is where most of the aussie eucy oil was and is made.
Change your question or alter the words to get what you want from google search. It may take time.

It's a pleasure to see superheros taking such an interest in science. And this tiny ad:
