I'm looking for some more manure in my home town to start a couple more compost piles. In the past I've just gone with whstever source on craigslist was closest. Now I'm worried though about what the animals are being fed, whether or not they're on meds, etc.. How much does this matter. I had someone tell me before that it doesn't really since it's undergoing a composting process but I guess I'm a little sceptical. Does whether or not they're fed organic feed matter? Dewormers?

Hi Warren, I'm worried about that as well.  I'm less worried about the medications but I'm more worried about if persistent herbicides were used on their feed.

Here's a Mother Earth News article about it:

And here's a post by Grow a Greener World after composted horse manure from treated hay killed the raised beds they count on for their tv show

I found a horse lady that just uses organic feed.  I found another potential source by searching Craigslist for "organic".  I figured anyone with organic hay for sale would know who they sell it to and maybe connect me with someone nearby with manure.  When I searched though there just happened to be a post looking to get rid of their organic manure

Good luck, not all manure is treated with the icky stuff.  It's hard to be up to speed on all the different herbicides.  You can ask the rancher but if they buy hay it's even harder to figure out.

Right on thank you for that I never even thought it would be much of a problem. So much free poop out there but now it's gotta be organic I guess.
