Would like to know if diatomaceous earth will control coccidiosis in beef cows.  How much woul you have to feed and for how long

I don't know anything about DE. I have treated calf scours by force feeding hydrogen peroxide, one of the causes of scours is coccidiosis. Force feeding cows H2O2 would probably be very difficult.

A planned rotation will do a lot to prevent coccidiosis, as well as other diseases and parasites. If the problem is not too bad now and the cows are in good condition, frequent well planned moves might be enough for the cows immune system to fix it.

Monensin is the name of the medication that is fed to control coccidiosis in a dry lot situation.

Hi Beth, welcome to permies. A lot of literature on diatomaceous earth and alternatives to chemical de-wormers suggest a rate of 2% by weight of the animals feed. Let's say a grazier has their cows on grass and they don't feed their cows a commercial feed, they mix DE in with mineral supplements such as kelp and/or sea salt. Some even offer DE free choice for the cows. It seems that results are achieved in one to two weeks. Some folks keep DE mixed in their feed or minerals all the time and don't wait for symptoms to arise to use DE. It is noted that DE will absorb water in the rumen, so make sure the cows have access to plenty of water. Hope this helps!
