I once bought a secondhand Kleen Kanteen insulated food thermos off the internet and was surprised how flowery it smelled when I received it, like something artificial and probably inedible was kept in it. The unappealing smell persisted even after I washed it and stored it with the lid on. It took me awhile to get rid of the smell. I first sprinkled a bunch of baking soda inside, put the lid on and left it for about a week. Then I washed it again, put the lid on and waited a day before giving it another sniff test. If I could still detect the smell, I repeated the baking soda process, plus aired it outside in the sun on very warm days. Eventually this cleared up the smell and I felt comfortable using it for food. Frustrating purchase, but it was fixable. Hope this offers a way to approach your situation with the instapot.

And I would not advise using steel wool. I've added more scratches to a secondhand ss skillet once with that idea, and it was many more than one would want.

When a stainless steel pot comes from the factory, the inside is usually highly polished.  So much so that it's more non-stick than a non-stick coating.  If, from the start, we can stop it from getting scratched, it can act like a non-stick for decades.  But anything harder than a fingernail (like metal) or adding salt to a cold pan can cause scratches and pits that rough up the surface and trap foodstuff (and smells) and also make the pot harder to wash.

You can buy specific stainless steel polish and this works marvellously well at restoring the inside of a pot (I use it for high-quality second-hand pots).  But it's expensive and the chemicals make my skin try to fall off a bit.  For mild scratches, a paste of baking soda and water, scrubbed in the bottom until the arm is too tired, once a day until it's better does the trick.  I think this would also get rid of the chemicals as it would reduce the micro scratches it can hide.  

Scrub buds (plastic and metal), as well as abrasive sponges, seem to scratch the pans very easily in their eagerness to get the food off.

I’ve made a baking soda paste, rubbed and let it  dry on the pot over night… I scrubbed and rinsed it this morning. I can’t smell any fragrance but my sense of smell isn’t terrific anymore so I made another baking soda paste all over it and will let that sit again today.

I didn’t have any steel wool… so I didn’t try that. I do have hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle so I may try that tomorrow after I rinse out the baking soda, for good measure.

Perhaps, I’ll just boil water in the pot to test if the smell gets in the water so I don’t sacrifice any more expensive organic food before I know for sure.

I certainly wouldn't want to risk a lot of food, but adding a single noodle to the boiling water might be a good test as the food may be more prone to absorbing the chemical scent than the water.

Hopefully the baking soda paste has fixed the problem. Would love to hear if it did! I'm really glad you posted about this, Alana. I just got a used instant pot and discovered it smells like whatever it is artificial fragrances are supposed to smell like. I normally try to smell used items before getting them, but wouldn't have even thought to smell the inside of such an appliance! I don't know how it got so stinky, but very glad to have the knowledge of how to approach fixing it!

I did the 1 noodle water test (I had to buy more noodles) and I didn’t notice any soapy taste or smell so hooray!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, all!!! This is an excellent post!  It provides evidence to what I've been experiencing (and all of you!) -- that synthetic fragrance scents and perfumes are becoming impossible to get out!  I'm incredibly sensitive to scents -- and it just drives me crazy that I can't get scents out.  Thank you to Paul, especially, for the link and description about fabric softener composition and emulsifiers getting into the weave of the fabrics.  Super helpful.

FWIW, my latest approach for machine washable natural fibers (typically 100% cotton) is similar to the posters in this thread -- I put vinegar in all the compartments of my HE LG front loader (detergent, bleach and fabric softener) and run a long cycle, extra water, extra rinse in hot water.  Then I smell the wet laundry -- if perfume or synthetic fragrance is still there, I repeat; if I can't smell it, I run a regular wash cycle with detergent (Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds) and vinegar in the fabric softener compartment.  Then I smell wet laundry again.  If I can smell any scent or fragrance, I repeat the whole thing.  Otherwise, I air dry and then smell again.  I try not to use the dryer until I'm sure the smell is gone -- I'm worried the heat will further bake the synthetic fragrance or scent into the fibers making it even harder to get out.

I've also started using Arm and Hammer Washing Soda in the drum for the wash cycle (1/2-3/4 cup) since I have hard water and think it may be affecting the ability to get the scents out--when I had softer water in a different city vinegar typically did the trick.  It seems to be working, but I only started this a couple of days ago.

Since I am scent-sensitive, we are a scent-free house.  However, I end up with scents when friends or family visit, especially in the sheets and towels (and I can smell it throughout the house).

Alas, just like other posters above, sometimes the scent is impossible to get out and then I typically donate the item.  Very frustrating that it takes so much time, energy and resources to get rid of these synthetic fragrances or perfumes.

I have discovered the absolute cure-all for getting the obnoxious chemical perfume odors out of clothing. PEE. I pee in a 5 gallon bucket, save it up for a week, throw the clothing in it, let it soak there for about 3 days and then wash it out really really good. This COMPLETELY strips ALL the obnoxious chemical perfume odors out. COMPLETELY.  I'd be happy... but it's a pain in the a** to clean a large down coat this way.

I have two "stinky" problems:

1) my latest pair of jeans. I will try the vinegar rinse. Washing it didn't work. Made my laundry room so stinky my nose closed up the minute I walked in...

2) A corner cabinet from the antique store. It solved a major storage need, but something stinky was kept in the cabinet at the base. I cleaned it then kept the door open for the first few weeks I had it and thought that had done it. I stored some sliced almonds in a Mason jar in the cabinet and had to toss them, they now taste "chemically,"

So... what do I try next for the cabinet? I will try vinegar there too. But don't hold out much hope as I've had it open for months and whatever the stink is has persisted...

First I would make up a slurry of baking soda and "paint" it on. You might have to go several rounds giving it 3-5 days to work each round.

If that didn't work, I'd be willing to try TSP (trisodium phosphate) which is recommended as a cleaner before painting. It gets a bad rap for the phosphate part polluting streams, so I'd put it at the base of a tree with known mushrooms living in the soil, and count on them to recycle the material.

Third, you didn't mention if the cabinet was painted or not. We like to go natural as much as we can on permies, but if the only way to salvage the cabinet is to paint just the inside of the bottom section, in my mind, that would be a win so long as you don't have to buy paint - it sounds like it's a small area, so if you put the word out, you're likely to find someone with some leftover paint that's not enough to do a big project, but will do your project.

Lastly - although you might decide this fits before painting - If it's solid wood, consider sanding the inside of the cabinet. If the stinky stuff was spilled, you might find that most of the "stink" is actually where the container was sitting. If it's soaked in there, maybe just sanding that part will be enough.

It is solid wood and stained/varnished.

I had left the door open the last time I cleaned it so it was open this morning. I smeared it with baking powder paste. We'll see if that takes care of it! I thought perhaps the open cabinet had purged the scent, but when I got down to it to put on the paste, I could still smell whateva it was!

- First round of baking powder paste didn't work. Haven't checked the jeans/vinegar rinse yet -- we'll see. Maybe one out of 2?

- Vinegar rinse on the jeans didn't work, made a big difference, but...

- My partner suggested rubbing alcohol on the cabinet, and that and coffee grounds (we had a K cup show up in an auction lot...) seems to have worked.

When I was in the book biz, we used to buy "coffee pods" the prepackaged coffee in filters and put stinky books with the pods in plastic bags for a while. Didn't entirely remove mildew smells, but it surely helped!

My husband brought home a used car for me but I couldn’t stand the perfume that permeated the drivers side seatbelt. I found a solution, (or should I say solvent?) that worked perfectly. I bought a gallon of the cheapest vodka in the store and used that to extract the odor. Here’s how I did it. I made a soaking tank out of a cut off quart milk bottle.  Filled it with vodka. Pulled out the seatbelt and secured the top with a clothespin To prevent it from retracting. Soaked the seatbelt in the vodka overnight. It took 3 repeats of this procedure to get the perfume out. The first 24 hr soak transferred quite a bit of perfume stench to the vodka.

Speaking of getting perfume stench out, how many here have had the unpleasant experience of greeting a friend or relative with a hug where your faces touch one another and then you get that damn nauseating perfume smell from them and you have to scrub your face and ear to get it out?!

Hi! I am really sensitive to fragrance. The best method I have found is via ozone. I have a small ozone generator. I put the item in a large fragrance free trash bag with the ozone generator for 24 hours (Outside!). Then I air it out outside for a day. If it still smells I repeat the process as many times as it takes to render it scent free. This is the best method I have found for things like frabreeze which tends to linger FOREVER. Ozone actually destroys the fragrance molecules. I mentioned it above but this needs to be done outdoors or somewhere with very good ventilation as ozone can be really dangerous if inhaled.
