This is a tutorial on how to make the first post of a review page, also known as a Summary Post

(For a tutorial on How to Make a Review for a Review Grid, click HERE)
(For a tutorial on How to Make a Gear Review Really Shine, click HERE )

Here's a list of our current Review Grids:
• Book Review Grid
• Seed & Plant Source Review Grid
• DVD/Film Review Grid
• Gear Review Grid
• Critter Breeder Review Grid

• Step
1

Pick a Forum to Post in

Pick an appropriate forum for your review. For example, if reviewing:

• A book, you might want: books
• A seed source, you might want:  seed saving / exchange / plant breeding
• A seed company or plant nursery, you might want: resources: seeds, plants, honey, consulting, etc. or fruit trees
• A piece of gear (cookware, boots, tools, etc.--if you use it, it counts!) you might want:Gear

• The forum DOES NOT need to be the same one that the review grid is, though it can be if that's the most suitable forum.

Step
2

Make a Thread

First, check to make sure there isn't already an existing thread about the thing you're reviewing. The easiest way to do this is probably just to read (or ctrl+F and search) through the appropriate review grid.

Here's a list of our current Review Grids:
• Book Review Grid
• Seed & Plant Source Review Grid
• DVD/Film Review Grid
• Gear Review Grid

• If there's an existing thread, you can skip this tutorial and go straight to making a review! Here's How to Make a Review for a Review Grid (seed source, book, gear, film, etc)

If there isn't an existing thread about it, make a new topic for your review.

Step
3

Make Your Thread a Wiki

We make Review Pages into wiki's so that they can be easily updated with new information about the thing being reviews.

Here's how to make it a wiki.

First, click the "wiki" tab under where you write. It looks like this:

Then, click "This is a Wiki that accepts comments" (that way people can add their reviews).

Step
4

Make Your Summary Follow the Format of Other Summaries

For our review summaries, it's nice to have things look relatively uniform so people know where to look to find information about the thing being reviewed. To do that, we've made a templete. Below you'll see a spiffy little box with lines. This has all the "code" for bolding and sizes of headers, as well as all the sections of a summary. Copy and paste it into your thread!

Summary

You put the summary text here.

Where to get it?

Amazon.com

Related Videos

Related Threads

Related thread at Permies

Related Websites

Related Website

Step
5

Fill in the Blanks!

Now that you've got the template pasted into your thread, fill in the blanks. If you don't have the time to find related threads or videos, we understand. But, if you do, we'll give you an extra apple and maybe some pie!

Step
6

Post Your Summary!

Go ahead and post your summary post. Now you can go and write your review. If you need help on making your review show up in it's grid, go HERE)

I have a few questions about making a book summary.
On line 13 of the template, there is a bunch of code after the YouTube link. Is all of that supposed to be included? What does it do?

Is there an affiliate link for Chelsea Publishing? An old post mentioned requesting a link from Destiny, but that was many years ago.

Do we still add Amazon links for other countries, or just the .com in the template?

I can answer a couple of your questions.

Nikki Roche wrote:On line 13 of the template, there is a bunch of code after the YouTube link. Is all of that supposed to be included? What does it do?

No, that code shouldn't be there. All you need is the YouTube link.

What's odd, is that when I tried to edit that code out, it doesn't show up on the edit screen. So I'm not sure how it got there or why. Nicole wrote the original post, so maybe she has an idea. Nicole?

Not that I've found. Hopefully, someone may  have the answer.

We do have affiliate codes for Amazon US, CA, and UK. That's one reason we add those links. Here are the codes:

Amazon.com  rs12-20
Amazon.uk   rs12-21
Amazon.ca   ?tag=permies06-20

The one for Amazon US is automatic, anytime someone clicks on the link. I'm not sure about the other two.

The codes are added after the book number in the url, for example - amazon.com/exec/obidos/ISBN/0865718326/rs12-20

Do we still add Amazon links for other countries, or just the .com in the template?

I add them:

1. for any affiliate revenues we might accrue
2. as a courtesy for members in other parts of the world. If they order from their regional Amazon, they don't have to pay VAT type fees.

I've been adding Amazon AU as well (maybe someone can sign us up for an affiliate account there(!) because we have so many member who live in Australia.

A lot of people don't seem to like Amazon, so it's always good to include other buying options as well. Usually the publisher's sales link, one from the author's website if they have it, and maybe for one or two other book seller sites as well.

Hi, since it is very common to not follow the correct format when doing a review, I think we can put a reminder in the summary.
What about adding this line at the bottom?

Warm reminder.
For a valid review, begin your post with the sentence: I give this (whatever) # out of 10 acorns. where # is your score.

reminder, the very first line of the review post has to be "I give this (whatever) # out of 10 acorns"
Or the review won't count
