Does anyone know where I could get my hands on a cultivar most suitable for consumption? Ornamental cannas are practically a weed on my place after I introduced them several years ago. I can't kill them so I might as well utilize themand plant some that are most sutiable. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canna_Agriculture_Group

You will want to look for Canna edulis (common name Achira). I'd recommend getting some rhizomes from someone (not seed) and giving them a whirl.

If you have trouble finding someone with rhizomes you can order them from http://karcheskycanna.com/ (be aware that they list them as "Anchiras" instead of "Achiras").

Good luck!

Dave

Curious if anyone in the San Francisco Bay Area has achira available. Thought I’d try here before posting a new thread.

I have canna edulis! Always can trade and share. They do grow fine from seeds too. Must be scarified though or take forever to germinate otherwise seeds are all good.

I would love to get a bulb or seeds from you. I don’t have a whole lot to trade, tree kale and collards, cape gooseberry, chufa grass, white sapote seeds, a couple of carob seedlings I started.

I would totally trade you for tree kale, collards, and chufa grasses! Already growing the rest which are all great species too. Could send both seeds and rhizomes whatever you think or both.

Could you hold this puppy for a sec? I need to adjust this tiny ad:
