Thickness of softwood cuttings when propagating kiwi - question

Is this good advice?  I found a site that recommended softwood cuttings be at least thick enough to stand upright with out bending over to touch the ground.  
I would like to propagate some of my Kiwi so I can expand my kiwi next spring.
