Living in community is the only real solution curtailing theft. Living in Portland, Oregon I can attest to this, because now days, at least in urban settings, the thieves are often drug zombies.  So having good neighbors is not only for safety reasons, it is only way to live. How to cultivate good neighbors  . . . there's the challenge! We do it, well, more because my wife is amazing at letting go of judgements and just loving.

Silver Fox Rabbits . . . I think your daughter could have her rabbit if you can find her one, young, Silver Fox buck. Let her keep it indoors for the first few weeks . . . he will be her best friend for years.
We raise Silver Foxes here in Portland and have seen this scenario and it works. Silver Foxes are known as the breed to have when it comes to "friendly" temperament. And they are beautiful!

Nicole,   from my wife who does this sort of weaving . . . silk if it a belt you will use for occasional use and unwaxed linen, or hemp, for everyday wear.      Rod

In an egg shell . . . you try making an egg a day on chicken feed!
I mean think of it, you need to make that yolk first, then the white stuff and then! you have to coat it with this heavy tough shell. Everyday!

Very cool! I love it . . . mixing Toby’s “lecture" (powerful words/voice) with music.
Thank-you Daniel, Deadnettlez, Toby.
Bring in some movement . . . of course.
Another step . . . some visuals.
Real life permaculture for today’s “peak everything”.  Mmmmmm, mmmmmmm.

I have always been impressed with Toby’s vision . . . it makes perfect sense to me that he would recognize the need for some form of measuring a person’s value as a teacher.
I really like the “Wheaton Eco Scale”.
It has been my experience that book knowledge and real experience are best taken together, and it takes some years before teacher status emerges in some.
I’m not big on organizational structure but I hope others take some action in this regard . . .

Hi Josiah, I was taught how to use a scythe by an elder who knew how. His only words of advise, routinely shouted as I struggled, "Keep the heel down!"
It took a few months but it finally sunk in through my thick skull; keep the heel of the scythe down and you are forced to work from your hips not your arms/shoulders. Doing it right, and safe like this, you can scythe all day. No sweat.

Josiah Miller wrote:Hello all,

I'm experimenting with a small plot of Barley this spring. I plan on harvesting with an ancient scythe (after considerable work to get it sharp), but have never used one. I've watched alot of youtube videos about them but I know you can't learn everything from a video.

my questions:

--anyone with experience using a scythe, do you have any helpful information or suggestions

--I live near Salem, but if anyone in western OR would be willing to show me in person that would be awesome. (maybe I should mention that the Barley shall hopefully end up in some homebrew, some of which would find it's way back to you ) . I can travel to you to learn.

Milo, that looks like Russian Thistle to me. Something you would want to keep an eye on and not let it spread.
I've been fighting (both physically and philosophically) english ivy at Marylhurst U. and Mary S. Young Park.
I know Permies have different views on 'invasives'.
For now I vow to control.

Hi Michael, I'm up in 100 Mile House, but was born and raised in Vancouver and area.

Up here, in the Cariboo, permaculture is in many ways another name for the "the way my grandfather did it". For some it is still the way it's done.

I've farmed and worked outside all my life, always with a sense of what is right relative to all beings.
