I came here to mention the bitternut hickory. I haven't seen one, but there's a Youtube channel for Twisted Tree Farm and the guy there has a video that has me very interested in bitternut hickory as a fuel source.

Some highlights from the video:

  • Thin shelled, can be tossed through a press with shell on.
  • The bitterness doesn't stay in the oil
  • 1 five gallon bucket of nuts yields around 3/4 of a gallon of oil

  • I managed to buy a big wooden loom at an auction for $25, so I decided to finally read the book and it's great! I'm excited to start growing and developing my own landrace of flax soon

Is there any possibility of getting a retry shipment of the seeds with the understanding that if it fails again, that's that? I was pretty set on planting the flax this year.

Thank you for confirming my thoughts. I just started collecting random mushrooms I find and doing the whole "blend" it in water, pour it out in an area that stays fairly moist in hopes of slowly bringing mushrooms into my property. So I'll probably just make a "Do not go here" area of the property where I dump poison ivy while building up my mushroom bank (probably not a real term). When I'm getting good amounts of mushrooms growing on my property, then I'll start the mycoremediation process. And then it will continue for as long as I live here. But at least I can turn the poison ivy into usable compost.

All this talk about using mushrooms to break down oil makes me want to try piling all my poison ivy in one spot, then innoculating with mushrooms to try breaking down the Urushiol.

We have 4 tracts of land that total up to 39.3 acres. There is an old stone barn that needs a little repair, an old foundation with a well, a spring box, and electric runs along the creeks. There is also an old mill run/sluice. There is a fork of two large creeks on the property. We planned on making this our future homestead, but we won't be able to get to it for a good while, so we thought we might pass the opportunity on to someone who can make use of it now. We would consider a land contract with at least $15,000 down. With $15k down the terms would be $2000 per month for 15 years, no interest or fees. The higher the down payment, the lower the monthly payment. $263,000 if buying in full.

There are a few restrictions on the property:
    1. No buildings or storage of any kind is permitted within 100 feet of a shared roadway or within 30 feet of a property boundary. These areas shall serve as utility easement areas. Fences must not encroach upon road easements which are defined as the area within 50 feet of a shared roadway. These setback distances may be adjusted on certain tracts.

    2. No refuse, debris, unused building materials nor derelict vehicles, machinery or equipment in whole or in part shall be stored or allowed to collect on the property unless completely enclosed within a building or garage.

    3. Livestock and pets are permitted so long as they are not allowed to create a nuisance to nearby land owners. Kennels greater than 5 dogs and feedlots are not permitted.

    4. No parcel may be subdivided if any of the parcels created from the division would be less than 5 acres in size.

    5. No single wide mobile homes are allowed on the property. Double-wide mobile homes and modular homes are allowed as long as they are no older than five model years when placed on the property and meet the requirements of Covenant #6. No camper, RV, bus, portable building, shed or shack of any kind shall be used as a residence. Camping for more than 45 days in a 12 month period is not permitted. Camping shall be defined as staying on the property without staying in a residential structure on a full concrete foundation, as defined below.

    6. Any residential structure built on the property or moved onto the property must have at least 600 square feet of enclosed living space on one level. Said structure must be permanently attached to an adequate, continuous, concrete foundation (concrete slab, stem wall/crawl space or full basement) of at least 600 square feet in size.

Also please note that timber with a stump diameter of greater than 8 inches (when measured at ground level) may not be cut or removed until the property has been paid for in full. Allowances shall not be unreasonably denied for on-site construction or clearing/maintaining roads and/or trails.

There appears to be no kitchen or bedroom. Is the whole point of this supposed to be like an extension for your camper?

    Hi everyone,

My family just moved to southern MO from WI recently. We bought a home with 3 acres in the middle of a smallish town. We also have almost 40 acres outside of town that we want to develop into a homestead in the future. I wanted to reach out and see if there were other permies in the area and what they are looking for or can offer.

What we are looking for: Fruit and nut seeds, plants, fencing, tools, building materials, jerseys (preferably mini), poultry, sheep, goats, bees

What we can offer: Professional web development, limited physical labor, land, use of a truck, uncut hay, limited money, use of a nice electric meat grinder (can do poultry bones), use of a nice grain mill

I see the live clock stream. I could access and post in the chat. I can access the three hidden forums.

By the way, you're handling the lead up to the event quite well. I've seen web projects where the devs just test internally and hope that it would work for the intended audience later.
I like your method much better.
    Hi Paul,

Email received. When I went to the llink, and then logged in, I was able to download the goodie
