Hello, I am new to the forum! I have lurked around a bit and finally made an account.
Me and my partner currently live in Arizona Phoenix area. We live in the city with no land yet just a container garden so far. We want to get some land to homestead on and are in love with the PNW especially Washington.
What are some counties in Washington or Oregon (or surrounding areas) that we check can out as possible locations for a small homestead?
I have read a bit about Lewis County, which seems like a slightly more affordable option, but I am concerned about the political atmosphere in rural areas. We love country life, but we are a gay couple and want to raise a family safely. Any tips for us?
I am aware that Washington might not be the best state for homesteading, because of taxes and building permits. I am not yet very knowledgeable, so I am open to any suggestions.

EDIT: due to COVID-19 we aren't traveling around looking for places right now. We are just using this time to plan for the future.
