thanks all for the feedback and suggestions,,, currently just an osb closet with a loose fitting door, but easy enough to insulate and seall the door.Calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) seems to be < $2 lb in small quantities and is a food additive so I'd assume it is safe... seems my best options are this, or a super efficient window unit (like the little midea) that would run 1-2 hrs per day, only when the sun was shining.

wasn't sure where to ask this so please let me know if I chose wrong....

I intended to have a semi-climate controlled closet (4x8x6h, ~200ft3) in my barn.  I'm on the AL/FL line so it never gets that cold for long and humididty is through the roof,  Purpose is multi-fold:

Winter - Not so concerned about humidity but need to keep above freezing
  • long-term storage of paints and other liquids that should not freeze in the winter
  • short-term storage of eggs in winter
  • long term storage of lipo batteries when not in use
  • keep lipo batteries for solar setup 'warm'
  • give the barn cat a place to sleep or rare very cold days

  • Summer Not so concerned about temperature but need to lower humidity
  • long and short-term storage of humidity sensitive equipment and supplies

  • Rarely occasionally need to remove everything else and jack temp up above ambient (concerned about humidity but can control that manually)
  • cure sweet potatoes and other crops w similar needs
  • allow mushrooms to inoculate substrate

  • I'm using a tricked out diesel air heater to manage temps in winter and to elevate it when needed but do not have a good solution for lowering humidity in summer as the only power is a small solar setup.  Unless I can find a 12v dehumidifier for RV/Boats with low consumption (preliminary searches imply these do not exist), an appliance-like dehumidifier (almost as much power draw as AC) is not an option - any suggestions from someone more clever than me?

Hello!  I'm late to th party but us folk in SouthEAST Alabama are like that...  I just moved from the city to a few acres south of Dothan.  Property needs a huge amount of work, building a house there, moving my bees and starting a small heard of ND/Pigmy crosses.  Would love to share and see what others  have going on!

Just moved from the city - I have had two Nigerian Dwarf wethers for a couple of years that love to agressively butt heads... now that I have some land, would now like a small heard of Pigmys. I'm finishing up a buck pen (50x50) and an adjacent small pasture for a few girls (1.5 acres for now). I'm getting ready to fence another 1.5 acres but planning on rotating the girls between the two and not using both at the same time. Pasture has tons of near-perfect forage for goats but 50% is occasionally a little wet.

    Three questions from a newbee,,,
  • Is it reasonable/safe to introduce a horned pigmy buck to live with the disbudded weathers in the buck pen?
  • Given plenty of land that is dry year round, how worthless (for goats) is the wet part of the pasture?
  • What number of pigmy does is reasonable on 1.5 acres?

  • Thanks in advance!

Ealtor, Zillow, Landwatch, LandsOfAmerica, though Realtor and Zillow are pretty tied to MLS and the otheres may have stale listings.  Hardest thing for me was to be patient... took a year and many miles of driving to find something in your area (that we hope to close on 15ac next month).

Having lived in cities in all three states, before buying I looked hard at differences between AL, FL, GL... for our case
AL makes most sense, now that the guv is just an incompetent drunk, unlike those before her who were blatantly corrumpt
GA more expensive and unfortunately state level changes driven only by Atlanta needs, no consideration for anything else.
FL... part you're talking is beautuful but has all the problems of AL AND GA ('cept a govener hooked on drugs or just power, rather than booze)

    Good Luck

Hello all!  Finaly moving to some property...  fortunatly coincidedntal owbership and zoning issues have a allowed me to keep 2 goats as well as chickens and pigeons in the city.  My goats currently live off hay and commercial feed and I am looking forward to allowing them to browse more (but'll still feed hay and pellets).   I was walking the soon to be purchased property today and did notice a fair amount of pokeweed.  I understand this is not good for some animals including goats.  If my goats have plenty of other choices (I don't plan on using them to clear land and browse it clean), will they avoid this?  Or are my plans of moving them from their realitively small pen to a few acres or pasture and woods a bad idea because of the poke weed.  The property is mostly hardwood bottom in South Alabama, and I did not see any other plants of great concern.

    Thanks in advance!
