Biography
Have been homesteading in Central America last 15yrs, politics there have gone bad so returned to States (frying pan into fire it seems).

Looking a place to raise food, live simple life, enjoy.

I am SWM, 52yrs old, if you can eat it, I have most likely raised and cooked it.

I have a homestead on an Island that looks like the picture, but if you don't like "jungle" you might rethink the tropics.

I built good sized gardens (approx 1/2 acre) for a friend in Nicaragua about the same altitude and climate as your place, good rainfall & plenty of water, it was great, easiest place I have ever grown. A few yrs of building the soil and it will be amazing. Could grow anything but is so remote that is no viable market, the locals in that area live on rice, beans, & corn, no money for luxuries like lettuce or tomatoes. Needless to say his workers, friends, and animals eat extremely well

My place is on the Caribbean Coast and the growing there is more challenging, the weather is extreme, up to 200 inches of rain a yr. Huge variety of tree crops offsets the smaller vegetable production.

In my experience, unless you have many Gringo Expats in your area you will have a problem with seeing any profits, the mushrooms may be the exception as not many growing them. Few yrs ago could have done OK with greens but are much more common these days, lots of locals growing them. You will need expats to have any chance selling premium crops.

With any "common" (those you currently have growing) crops you will never be able to compete with the locals who have no (or little) overhead (family lands, family labor).

Never been in your area of CR so by no means an expert, have spent 15yrs
growing in Nicaragua and many trips to CR over the yrs to visit friends there with farms.

Profits aside, with an acre in that kind of climate you can produce an amazing array and amount of food and live a great life.

What area in CR? How much land? What crops are you interested in?

Unless you have spent an abundance of time in Latin America I would caution jumping in head first.

I spent the last 15 yrs homesteading in Central America and the education I received was at times overwhelming to say the least.

The standard advice given by seasoned expats, travel around the area you are interested, rent for 6 months,  see if you still like it, if not try another spot.

You have to be able to accept and quickly adapt (or face certain failure) that little if anything works the way it does in your home country. Laws are not always interpreted the same for foreigners & locals. Training local labor to methods totally foreign to them can be near impossible in some cases.

Take lots of money & patience, is far from impossible, but will be much more challenging than you can imagine.
