My fiance and I raised 5 chickens - and 2 roosters, his mistake - several years ago in the city limits. The noisiest of the crew were the 2 roosters (1 of these was a bantam), but this isn't what caused ire among our neighbors. it was when my fiance let the critters out of their coop - which he built - and they got in the neighbors' yards.  Personally, I found the crowing every morning at 4-ish to be very annoying, that and the big red rooster trying to attack us every time we fed them. When we move out west to settle on our land, we plan to raise goats and possibly sheep - no more chickens, I guess, unless there are desert breeds.

My fiance and I just bought land out there, in the area of Cantil. We are a mixed-race couple (I'm half-Black, he's White) and I'm hoping this won't be too much of an issue the way it is in his hometown down here in NC. We have no kids, 4 pets. I am an artist and writer, he is a carpenter. We know the area is desert but beyond that, we can't find too much info on it and I've left a few messages & emails for info from the county, but no one has responded yet. We are allowed to build a mobile home on the land and can have up to 8 horses or 12 chickens, as an example. What can we expect from living in that part of the county? How off-grid is it? We would have to obtain our power from Neuralia Rd, which is about 5-6 blocks from our land of 2 and a half acres. I don't want to post questions on City-Data because the people there tend to make everything about politics and race. Thank you for reading.

We just closed on 2 and a half acres of land in Cantil. There is power at a nearby road, but we'll have to try for a well or haul in water. Right now, we are still out of state due to extreme heat but soon as the weather cools off, we will start setting up our household. We're allowed to put a mobile home on the property. Cheers!

Someone told me that San Bernadino county is pretty live & let live, as far as the unincorporated places go. I don't live in California - yet - but I just bought land in Kern county and am trying to find out more info. All I know so far is that we can put a mobile home on the land. Good luck!

We're thinking about a shipping container or dome house. I've reached out to San Bernadino and Riverside, SB is more amenable to what we have in mind.

Thanks for the advice. I am doing that now, contacting real estate agents. In fact, I am going to be speaking with two this afternoon.

Thank you so much. I just contacted a local realtor and am keeping my fingers crossed that she can help us to find what we seek. Cheers!

My fiance and I have been looking online via Redfin, Zillo, Landwatch, Land & Farm, Mojave Realtor, and a few others. Some of the lands that are for sale show up on all the same sites, so we're wondering if we should simply buy the land through a real estate agent or directly from the seller (via Craigslist, for example)? We will only be able to fly out to California from the East Coast one time to view the land & make the deal. We also need to be able to camp on the land while we build; off-grid is okay but we'll need access to water even if via well because we have pets. We're looking in San Bernadino, Kern, and San Luis Obispo counties. Thank you for your time and advice.

My fiance and I have been studying permaculture here on a friend's property in NC, but we're about to buy land in California near to where your property is. If you would be willing, we'd like to help you out. truffles trumpets, this is a g m a i l where you can respond more quickly if interested. Thank you for your time.
