Yonna, The "Operation Self-Reliance" initiative is a cooperative effort of several for-profit and non-profit organizations to build off-grid communities for those who are determined to live a self-reliant lifestyle but don't want to go it alone. Our first community, Riverbed Ranch, Utah, has over 140 residents so far (half are kids), and our 2nd community, Coslor Cove, AZ, is just getting started on 1,298 acres East of Snowflake, AZ (in the less-hot part of AZ).
Coslor Cove isn't just about living off the land; it's about forming a vibrant community of like-minded individuals. Governed by a cooperative board and a community council, it offers an unparalleled mix of household autonomy and community cooperation. If you choose, you can be a part of regular socials and contribute to the community's governance and interpersonal relations.
By joining one of these two co-ops, you become a co-owner of the entire 1,200+ acre land, PLUS, you get a 99-year, auto-renewing lease for the one-time membership fee. Between that and what you need to build out your homestead (solar and septic systems, water well and storage tank, a greenhouse, a passive-solar home, and a barn or shop), you'll need around $235k minimum to participate.
