This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Homesteading. (Note that this BB is part of a four-part choose your own adventure called Little List. You must complete four Badge Bits in the Little List.)

Note there are a couple of different families.

Ionizing - Uses radioactive element) More responsive to flaming fires.
(infographic)

Photoelectric - (Uses LED element) More responsive to smouldering fires.
(infographic)

Which is "best" is up for debate and you may want to do a combination of both, based on which type of fire would be most expected.
For instance when I did my house I used mainly photoelectric detectors, figuring that the greatest danger would be from electrical shorts smoking away, but I used an ionizing detector instead near the wood stove
in case something bursts into flame.  In my attached pump-house I installed both (attached to the main system) as I want to keep "an eye" on things since it has a heater and I don't want hidden problems getting out of control.

Instead of fixing the ceiling mounted, electric integrated fire alarm when it malfunctioned, my landlord handed me a wall-mounted battery powered fire alarm after ripping out the original. Well, lemonade out of lemons, it lets me do this BB.

I don't trust how long it will work since they gave me a used one, so I went with the mounting method that allows for a quick replacement if need be.

Here is my submission for the Homesteading - Sand for Straw points - Install a Smoke Detector BB.

I decided to install two combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in my converted shipping container house.  My house has two rooms and the first unit is installed in the office/kitchen area near the south-end window and about 6 feet south of the wood stove.

To document the completion of the BB, I have provided:

The smoke detector upstairs was expired and needed to be replaced. It is a hardwired detector, so I replaced it with a hardwired smoke/CO detector that has a battery backup as well. (I replaced upstairs that I am submitting for the CO detector BB.)

I bought a security system and made sure to include an additional smoke detector. Had to put the holes at a weird angle to make the detector align correctly.

I installed a new smoke detector with 10 year battery and tested it. This house has a decommissioned alarm system that used to network the smoke detectors, so it is not wired for 120v detectors with signal wire.  That is preferred because then all of the smoke detectors will alert simultaneously, but this battery only stand-alone smoke detector is better than nothing. It also has an exit light feature which is pretty cool.

We bought a smoke detector that also serves as a carbon monoxide detector.

After reading the installation menu carefully we decided to place it in the room where the stove is but not too close.
We'll only need one alarm as we don't have doors but arches separating rooms.

Dear Timothy

I'd like to contest the rejection of my BB submission, as

1. this is also a smoke detector
2. this requirement of not being allowed 2-in-1 is not stated in the rules of the BB
3. isn't permaculture design encouraging to combine multiple functions of an element?

I realize my wording is a little wonky, my apologies.

The 2 in 1 detector is fine, the issue is using the same installation for two separate BBs. The intent of the BBs is having two separate unique installations. It could be two 2 in 1s, but giving one event double credit is not the intent of the BBs. I gave credit to the CO detector BB for this particular install.

I've installed a smoke detector in the kitchen.

My Otessa doesn't allow screws or nails in the house, so I have used command hooks to put this up on a cabinet.
