Note to self:  Leave the house while the oven self-cleans, it smells.   Self cleaning the oven is not a set and forget, once the cycle is complete the ash residue needs to be wiped up, the glass on the inside had to be cleaned with a baking  soda and razor blade and the racks needed to be cleaned. I need to clean the oven more often. I am ready for Thanksgiving pies. I did forget to take the picture of the oven running the self clean.

I bought an ugly cast iron skillet for $2 at a garage sale and wanted to try restoring it at the same time as cleaning my oven, so I left a rack in (it didn't seem to hurt it).

Good as new, almost

Today was chilly and I thought it would be a good day for the high heat.  The fire alarm didn't seem to think so, and my neighbors know I have a clean oven.

Did you use any additional cleaner? Just let us know either way and I'll certify this BB!

Staff note (Rob Lineberger) :

I certify this BB as complete!  Welcome, Julie!  You've earned an air badge but I'm not 100% certain how to give it to you.  But I'll find out.

Staff note (Rob Lineberger) :

Found it!  Enjoy your spiffy new air broom!

No extra cleaners; I just rinsed out a micro-fiber cloth over and over (and over) again with hot water to wipe the ash. .

Forgot to take a picture of the mess before I ran the self-cleaning cycle - hopefully a picture of the gunk after the cycle ran but before wiping out counts?

I've never run a self-cleaning oven before, but after my partner's attempt at a pumpkin pie leaked all over, I figured I'd give it a shot! Everything wiped away with a damp sponge, no other cleaners required.

Staff note :

Staff feels this is an edge case. Please be more careful with the "before" pix or other details next time. This was obviously cleaned though so I'm going to certify it.

I removed the racks and liner and gave the door and bottom a quick wipe down to remove any loose gunk.

I used baking soda to scrub down the racks and the same scrubbing paste to clean the inside of the door/window after the cycle had run. I've cleaned before just by hand with baking soda and the grease splatter on the window was so much easier to scrub off after the self-clean cycle!

Rinsed out the same cloth to wipe down all surfaces inside the oven.

So I had already cleaned my oven really well for a previous nest BB, so I didn't think I was going to see much of an improvement. WRONG! So the self cleaning made my house hot and stinky, BUT it did some really cool things.

1) It made it so I could clean the door which up until that point I struggled to get the grease and oil off that had hardened on. So that was good
2) It didnt create a massive ash pile (because I had already cleaned it previously), but it was able to clean the places that were too hard to reach or grooves I couldn't get in.
3) My other cleaning procedures were super simple. I used a wet sponge to wipe down everything, then used a wire ball to scrub off the stuck on charred bits, then back to the sponge to remove and clean. Didn't need to use anything crazy other than water, sponge/metal ball, and elbow grease.

I used my self cleaning setting with just water and a rag.  It kinda got clean.  I posted those pics.

So I'd just deep cleaned the oven with baking soda and water, but I was sure I'd left some mess behind. I ran it for 2 hours only because it is hot out right now, and boy did the kitchen stink. Mostly just dried baking soda was left behind so I can feel pretty confident the oven is clean now.
