This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in Animal Care.

For this BB, you will control indoor fleas with permaculture!

For this BB, the minimum requirements are:
     - Not
         - flea collars, sprays, borates, flea bombs
     - Required:
         - Apply Diatomaceous Earth (DE) around edges of rooms
             - Unlike other BBs in Animal Care, since this is indoors it will last a very long time
         - Twice a week vacuuming with DE for three months
             - Spread DE and vacuum it up
         - Wash laundry and bedding more often and with more soap
     - Do one of the following:
         - Switch one room from carpet to hard surface floors
         - Feed pets/animals brewer’s yeast
         - Heat the house to 105F for more than 5 hours
         - Dehumidify the house to 30% or less for more than 4 days

To document your completion, provide proof of the following as pics or video (less than two minutes):
     - Before, during, and after applying the DE around room edges
     - Before, during, and after vacuuming the DE (only one time needs to be documented)
     - Before, during, and after construction/implementation of the additional "one" required flea control measure you chose
     - Prove your efforts mitigated fleas:
         - Document your starting flea load, at one month with controls in place and at three months with zero fleas trapped.  Measure with a 48 hour flea trap test.

A few of questions on this BB:
1. Can any other natural product be used for pets, such as used tea bags and garlic?
2.  What is a 48 hour flee trap?
3. Does the washing have to include more soap or can hot water (60 Deg C or 140 Deg F) be used which is better for the environment?

To achieve this BB does the one flee control measure need to be stated first then the rest of the BB submitted or can the whole lot lot be submitted at once?
Thanks

1. I think you can do additional things as long as they don't go against the list of prohibited options.
2. I think this is what they're talking about: Homemade flea trap
3. Yes it does.  Paul already advocates hot water (above 140F) so the soap seems to be critical
4. That wording is a bit funny, I'll adjust it.  The intent is that you do a before flea trap test, do all your things, then do the 1 month and 3 month tests

Thanks Paul!

To achieve this BB, I controlled an indoor flea infestation using Permies methods.  To ensure that I can document my activity adequately and add more information, I have created a journal.  When I am finished, these journal entries together with the pictures will provide a sound and verified reference to live a Permies lifestyle.  Because I do not have access to Brewers yeast, I used what we have been using for years to control parasites, worms and mites in the Chooks and cats.  This meets the  discussion/ guidance (point 1) by Mike Haasl.
