My video shows the dirty dishes in the sink, progress of the dishes being washed, the completed dishes with obviously less than 3 gallons water used.

I used Dr. Bronner's liquid castile soap which is grey water friendly according to the San Diego Sustainable Living Institute's website: https://www.sdsustainable.org/greywater-safe-soaps#:~:text=Liquids%20soaps%20are%20preferred%20over,using%20a%20lot%20of%20sodium.

Hi Jim!

Great video! However, you're going to need to do at least another round of dishes in order to meet the BB requirements.

Note: That isn't a dishwasher's worth of dishes. You need 2-3x that many. You also need to write about how you know your soap is greywater safe. That link doesn't mention it.

Here's my submission.  I'm a bit confused by the '5 small dishwasher rack' line.  I don't own a dishwasher, and I deliberately saved up dishes all day for this BB.  I normally wash up as I go, which is very economical with water, because I put a drop of soap on the sponge, dampen the plate till the grease is soft, wipe the plate with the sponge, then rinse it.

These are way more dishes than I'd normally use in a day -- it's about half the crockery I own!  I'm sincerely hoping it's enough for the BB, because it's my last one for the Nest sand badge, and trying to come up with more dishes to wash at once is going to be very contrived.

Note: The total amount of dishes should equal a dishwasher load. This may require up to 5 lots of dishes in a small  dish drying rack, or 3 - 4 in a large 2 tier rack.

Staff note (Paul Fookes) :

To achieve the number of dishes required, you may need to show dish washing from a few days.  The total amount of water used is still limited to 3 gallons US over all the washing up.  So, one gallon each wash, about 4 litres.  Best wishes getting the BB put to bed so you can get your sand badge.

Here is my submission.  My dishwasher broke with a full load in it.  You can see the blue soap in the bottom of the dishwasher in the dish drying picture.  Used Dawn soap, it says it has biodegradable surfactants, I hope that is enough.  I used the second sink to let the dishes drip dry because I don't want the extra water in my broken dishwasher.  It's only the second major appliance to break this week...at least I could fix the dryer.  Thanks for looking at this submission.

Here we go! We alternate between handwashing and using the dishwasher in this house but I found the water requirement an interesting challenge, which I want to bring into my daily habits permanently to reduce our consumption. We used Dawn Dish soap which says "biodegradable surfactants". I do not often scrub the cast iron pans with it, they get hot water for the most part.

Disclaimer: there are better soaps on the market for this use, especially for greywater, but this is what we had on hand. I didn't wish to go purchase specific soap for this project (more plastic, more consumption). A screenshot of the website simply says "biodegradable surfactants". The submission above mine was approved using the same soap, so I went with it.

I used about a gallon and a half of water including reusing some of the water I had just used to rinse my raspberry haul for the day (just a bit of plant matter which is okay for the scrubbing step.) I used unscented Castile soap (not the rose kind but that was the only bottle I had available to show brand.) We also reuse the dishwater for the garden.
