This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Natural Medicine.

For this BB, you will create a decoction of willow bark. Decoction is a method of extracting desired compounds from plant material by boiling/simmering the material.

Additional Information:
Mother Earth Living on Decoction

Hey Skip team! Starting a new workout, so I could appreciate a willow bark decoction! I harvested it from a willow on my canal bank, nearby. David Holloway says, "the redder the better!" Then I boiled it for several minutes, let it seep, and stored it in a re-used glass bottle in the fridge. It's so bitter!! How do you mellow the flavor?

Note: I hereby certify that this badge bit is complete! (I've never made willow decoction, so I don't know how to mellow it. If you find out, please share in the thread!)

Macey Vaughan wrote:Would I be able to complete this BB by decocting Red Alder Bark? It's also great for treating headaches in a similar way to aspirin--just like willow bark! It grows abundantly on my property but I've yet to find a local willow tree.

I didn't mean to submit this for certification. Oopsie! I'm not sure how to undo it and post as a regular reply.

No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better. This time, do it with this tiny ad:
