This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEM curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in Woodland Care.

Firewood warms you seven times (by my count).  Splitting it by hand is good exercise and builds some innate knowledge of how trees are put together.  Splitting on the ground isn't as much fun as a good splitting block.  Let's make a splitting block for our wood processing area!

Here's one way to do it.  Elevating the tire off the block allows for easier removal of wood chips and bits of bark:

Minimum requirements:
  - Make a splitting block starting with a hunk of log
  - No metal where you could strike with your axe (including screws)
  - Containment device attached to block that holds the firewood and keeps splits from falling
       - Tire
       - Wood frame
       - or something else?

Provide proof of the following as pictures or video (<2 min):
  - The log hunk you're starting with
  - Building the containment device
  - Finished chopping block

Hey, I didn't know there was a BB for this. Let's see if I can find my pictures.

Update: I cut some 2x4s and added them as spacers to square up the "Tire Legs" and support it better. The tire is held to the legs by screws which were driven from inside the tire out into the wood.

My son held my saw while I was taking the picture but I did the work by myself.

the chunk of wood. I was so proud of my chainsaw sharpening that I wanted to capture the chips

With a tire bolted to it. I need to add spacer boards to fit the supports better. The splay is ugly and it has fallen apart since then
