This is a badge bit (
BB) that is part of the
PEM curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the
wood badge in
Round Wood Woodworking.
Now it's time to build more structural stuff. Roundhouses are very neat and they're also round. Although they can be any shape we want. Roofs get tricky when they aren't square. Reciprocal roofs can adjust to different slopes and shapes. Let's build the roof structure for one!
Here's a
video showing one way to put them together:
Minimum requirements:
- Make a reciprocal frame roof structure
- At least 14' in diameter
- Bypassing rafters to give an oculus at the center
- Mating joints between rafters are flat, not round on round
- Rafters are bolted together at the top
- Rafters are bolted to the beams at the bottom
- Rafters and major supports are round wood
- Final layer of roof decking can be dimensional wood if needed
- The actual roof is part of the Building Wood badge
Note: You can have lots of muscle help on this
project but you need to be doing all the detail work (joints, drilling, fitting, etc)
Provide proof of the following as pictures or video (<2 min):
- Logs you're starting with
- First log in rough position
- All rafters in place
- Bolted joints top and bottom
- Purlins or intermediate roof supports installed
- Roof decking installed
