This is a badge bit (
BB) that is part of the
PEM curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the sand badge in
Dimensional Lumber Woodworking.
Where's the bathroom? Where are deliveries supposed to go? Is this plum plateau or serviceberry terrace? Maybe we need some outdoor signs made from natural materials!
Here's a
video of how to make high quality pine pitch glue:
Mike's note: This is somewhat experimental based on two years of crude trials. I used pine resin from a ponderosa pine plus ground up charcoal mixed while hot. I applied straight to the surface of the
wood and also to V grooves in the wood. The V groove approach seemed to work better. Using a chisel to flatten the pitch to the surface of the wood also worked. Please experiment and post results!
Minimum requirements:
- Make a sign using black pine pitch as the lettering or
art
- At least 5" tall by 18" wide
- Some means of hanging or posting the sign
- No treated wood
- Making the pine pitch is a BB in the Traditional Skills badge
Provide proof of the following as pictures or video (<2 min):
- The wood and your pine pitch
- Applying pitch to the sign
- The finished sign meeting the minimum size
- The sign hanging or posted
