You might have heard of
Sepp Holzer's spring terraces, which are series of terraces built on hillside terrain to create an artificial spring. The
water seeps through layers of rock and bedrock, and the naturally filtered water is collected into a cistern.
A humus well is a concept developed by Paul Wheaton as an extension of
Sepp Holzer's spring terrace design. As not all locations have the necessary bedrock for a spring terrace, Paul's design replaces the bedrock with plastic or a layer of clay.
